ジャイアントバイソン（Bison latifrons）は更新世に北米大陸のアラスカからメキシコにかけて分布したバイソンである。20万年間生存したが、最終氷期に絶滅した。
特徴[編集]
良い保存状態で見つかっているのが頭蓋骨と角のみであることから、本種の大きさは厳密にはわかっていない。脚の骨から、体重は現生のアメリカバイソンよりも25-50％大きかったと考えられており、史上最大の反芻類の一つであったことは間違いない[1][2]。
本種は地球上に存在したウシ類の中で最大の大きさを持ち、体長4.75メートル、鬐甲高2.3～2.5メートルである [3]。 体重は1,250kgから[4][5]2,000kg[6]。史上最大の反芻類の一つでもあり、体重では現生のキリンや絶滅した角の長いバッファロー（スイギュウ）であるペロロヴィス（Pelorovis）と同等であった。
角は端から端まで213センチメートルにもなり、現生のアメリカバイソン（66センチメートル）より遙かに大きかった[7][8]。
ユーラシア大陸（シベリア・モンゴル・中国など）に生息していたステップバイソンの亜種の一つである「Bison priscus gigas」は、形態・分布共にジャイアントバイソンとの類似性が強く、大きさや角の長さもジャイアントバイソンに匹敵した可能性がある[9]。
なお、ジャイアントバイソンが絶滅した時期は以前は約3万年前から2万年前とされることが多かったが、2022年にテキサス州南部から約1万3千年前の化石が発見されており、時期的に「第四紀の大量絶滅」に該当することからも、本種の絶滅と小型化した子孫の発生が人類に起因した可能性が高くなった[10][11]。
