Paulus (in inglese St. Paul), Op. 36, è un oratorio di Felix Mendelssohn. Il compositore curò le versioni e le esecuzioni sia in tedesco che in inglese entro pochi mesi dal completamento della musica all'inizio del 1836.

Il libretto "dalle parole della Sacra Scrittura" fu iniziato nel 1832. Il compositore con il pastore Julius Schubring, un amico d'infanzia, raccolse brani del Nuovo Testamento, principalmente gli Atti degli Apostoli e l'Antico Testamento, nonché i testi di corali e inni, in maniera composita sul modello di Bach. La composizione della musica iniziò nel 1834 e fu completata all'inizio del 1836.

Esecuzioni[modifica | modifica wikitesto]

L'opera fu presentata per la prima volta il 22 maggio 1836 (era stata completata nell'aprile di quell'anno[1]) al Festival della Musica del Reno Inferiore a Düsseldorf, direttore lo stesso Mendelssohn, e riscosse un successo entusiastico.[2] Tuttavia il compositore, mai soddisfatto, riprese in mano il lavoro e vi apportò varie modifiche prima di darlo alle stampe. In seguito, tradotto il libretto in inglese dall'amico Karl Klingemann, fu eseguita la prima inglese Liverpool il 3 ottobre 1836 ove riportò un successo travolgente destinato a durare nel tempo ancor più che nell'area tedesca e in altri centri musicali europei ove, a poco a poco, il lavoro cadde in un oblio protrattosi per oltre un secolo.[2] Il contralto Mary Shaw fu una delle soliste alla prima inglese. La prima rappresentazione negli Stati Uniti avvenne a Boston il 14 marzo 1837. Lo stesso Mendelssohn diresse la prima rappresentazione a Lipsia nella Paulinerkirche il 16 marzo 1837.[3] Numerose rappresentazioni seguirono in Europa e negli Stati Uniti.

Durante la vita di Mendelssohn, Paulus era un lavoro popolare e spesso eseguito. Oggi viene eseguito regolarmente in Germania e ben diffuso in entrambe le lingue originali attraverso una serie di registrazioni complete.

Sebbene ciò non sia riferito nel collegamento presente sul sito del Bard College, qualcuno ha scritto che "rispetto a oratori come il Messiah di Handel, l'Oratorio di Natale e la Passione di Matteo di Bach, o anche quello di Mendelssohn Elia, Paulus non è riuscito a mantenere il suo posto in repertorio ed è ora raramente eseguito "nella sua interezza.[4][2]
