Bison is a city in Rush County, Kansas, United States. In 2020, 179 people lived there.[3]

Bison was platted in 1888 by the railroad.[4][5] It was named after the American bison, which once ate there.[5]

Bison was a station on the Missouri Pacific Railroad.[6]

The first post office in Bison was created in May 1888.[7]

Bison is at 38°31′12″N 99°11′52″W / 38.52000°N 99.19778°W / 38.52000; -99.19778 (38.519915, -99.19789). The United States Census Bureau says that the city has a total area of 0.27 square miles (0.69 km2). All of it is land.[2]

Bison has hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters. The Köppen Climate Classification system says that Bison has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps.[8]

2020 census[change | change source]

The 2020 census says that there were 179 people, 85 households, and 53 families living in Bison. Of the households, 82.4% owned their home and 17.6% rented their home.

The median age was 51.5 years. Of the people, 93.3% were White, 1.1% were from some other race, and 5.6% were two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.1% of the people.[3][9]

The 2010 census says that there were 255 people, 104 households, and 72 families living in Bison.[10]

Bison is part of USD 403 Otis-Bison. The Otis-Bison High School mascot is Cougars.[11]
