Um ás da aviação ou ás de voo, ás de caça ou ás do ar é um aviador militar creditado por abater cinco ou mais aeronaves inimigas durante combates aéreos. O número exato de vitórias aéreas necessárias para se qualificar oficialmente como um ás é variado, mas geralmente é considerado cinco ou mais.

I Guerra Mundial[editar | editar código-fonte]
Ver artigo principal: Aviação na Primeira Guerra MundialO conceito do "ás" surgiu em 1915, durante a Primeira Guerra Mundial, junto com os primeiros combates aéreos. Era um termo de propaganda destinado a fornecer à frente doméstica um culto ao herói, diante de guerra de desgaste. As ações individuais destes pilotos foram amplamente propagandeadas, com a imagem do ás divulgada como um cavaleiro que lembrava uma época passada.[1] Por um breve período, quando o combate ar-ar estava sendo inventado, um piloto excepcionalmente habilidoso podia moldar a batalha nos céus. Durante a maior parte do conflito, no entanto, a imagem do ás teve pouco a ver com a realidade da guerra aérea, na qual os combatentes lutavam em formação e a superioridade dependia muito da relativa disponibilidade de recursos.[2]
O uso do termo surgiu quando jornais franceses apelidaram Adolphe Pégoud como l'As (o ás), depois que ele se tornou o primeiro piloto a derrubar cinco aeronaves alemãs. Os britânicos inicialmente usaram o termo "star-turns" (um termo do show business).
Os sucessos de áses alemães, como Max Immelmann e Oswald Boelcke, foram muito divulgados para o benefício do moral civil, e o Pour le Mérite, o maior prêmio da Prússia por bravura, tornou-se parte de seus uniformes. Na Luftstreitkräfte, o Pour le Mérite foi apelidado de Der blaue Max / The Blue Max, em homenagem a Max Immelmann, que foi o primeiro piloto a receber a condecoração. Inicialmente, um aviador alemão tinha que abater oito aeronaves aliadas para receber esta medalha.[3] À medida que a guerra avançava, as qualificações para Pour le Mérite foram aumentadas,[3] mas os pilotos de caça alemães de sucesso continuaram a ser saudados como heróis nacionais pelo restante da guerra.
Os poucos ases dentre os aviadores de combate foram responsáveis pela maioria das vitórias ar-ar na história militar.[4]
