English: Fossil trail of giant myriapod of the family Arthropleuridae near Laggan, Isle of Arran, Scotland. Two parallel fossil tracks running down and left from the pointing fingers. These are on a sloping slab of Carboniferous sandstone (about 300 Million years old) on the RH side of a narrow shingly inlet close to the “Duchess Anne’s salt pan” building.
[1] For discussion of arthropleurid trace fossils (this one belongs to the ichnogenus
Diplichnites), see Briggs et al. (1979).
[2] Not visible, by the camera position, there is a 9in. coal seam outcropping. These local coal exposures provided the incentive to evaporate sea water for its salt in the salt pans (from 1710 to 1735).
