Stephen Rea (Belfast, 31 de octubre de 1946) es un actor norirlandés.

Biografía[editar]

Stephen Rea nació en la ciudad de Belfast en 1946 en una familia protestante. Estudió en la Belfast High School y luego en la Queen's University Belfast. Tomó clases de teatro en la Abbey Theatre School. En la universidad coincidió con Neil Jordan y Stewart Parker.

Estuvo casado diecisiete años con Dolours Price, integrante del IRA, y tuvo dos hijos con ella, Danny y Oscar. Price falleció en Dublín en enero de 2013 y fue enterrada en el Cementerio de Milltown.[1]​[2]​

Carrera[editar]

Después de trabajar en el Abbey Theatre de Dublín, se mudó a Londres.[3]​ En 1967, interpretó a Paddy en The Shadow of a Gunman, de Seán O'Casey, en el Mermaid Theatre.[4]​

En 1980 regresó a Belfast,[3]​ donde fundó la Field Day Theatre Company junto con el dramaturgo Brian Friel, a quien había conocido en 1973 durante los ensayos de su obra The Freedom of the City en el Royal Court.[5]​[6]​[7]​ La primera obra que montó la compañía fue Translations, también de Friel, estrenada en Derry en septiembre de 1980.[7]​

En 1992 fue nominado a un premio Óscar por su actuación en The Crying Game, en la que interpretó a Fergus, un terrorista del Ejército Republicano Irlandés Provisional.[5]​[8]​ Posteriormente, trabajó en películas como Interview with the Vampire (1994), Michael Collins (1996), The Butcher Boy (1997) y V for Vendetta (2006).[6]​
