I'm curious as to why you deleted the Team selection section from Croatia at the 2011 World Championships in Athletics. Is it because it was empty? Hi CroesJ! I've created a template which makes writing medal entries into the tables on athlete biographies a bit easier and quicker. I've noticed you do these types of edits quite often. The competitions I have missed out on the template are low level events those which do not have significant coverage in Wikipedia thus far, making it unlikely that there will be a significant number of listings to be made (the purpose of the template being to speed up writing about competitions which feature frequently.

In terms of the CARIFTA/CAC Junior comps and their junior/youth divides – I think it is better to place this information in the event name, e.g. Youth 800 metres, or Junior 800 metres. The link to the competition is the same regardless, so there is little that can be done to differentiate it in the competition link. Similarly, in terms of the Boys/Girls aspect, there are no articles at "event-specific" level for youth competitions. The only reason for the inclusion of "Men" or "Women" is to generate a link to the respective event result article. That said, you could still generate a link to a Boys or Girls event article by writing "Boy" or "Girl". Also, I haven't tested what happens if you leave that section blank for entries which have no event-article.

The issue with using the MedalTable as a general medal list is that it contradicts the whole purpose of the lead-style infobox – infoboxes are intended to convey only the most important information about the subject, and should do so in a brief (not-exhaustive) manner. For example, if we included Carl Lewis's 1980 Pan American Junior medals into the lead section of the article it would give them undue prominence and would only detract from the more significant achievements which have defined him to a much greater extent. The advantage of the AchievementTable template is that international medals can be dealt with in an exhaustive manner in their own specific section, thus they do not detract from or interrupt the article itself. When adding a medal, we should consider whether it is among the foremost achievements of the athlete. If it is not, then it should be placed in an area of the article which carries less importance than the opening lines. SFB 20:44, 8 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

In my opinion pictures of athletes in biographical articles are very important. Because of copyright issues I try to realize this by external links.

Are there any objections or are there violations of Wikipedia rules?

I think links to external sources as here should not pose any problems.

But what about links to commercial sites selling images as here?

When creating a table, it is generally best to use the "class=wikitable" element, rather than the bare html code you are using. There are a number of good reasons for doing this (out lined at WP:Deviations) with the basic ones being better accessibility for users (particularly disabled/visually impaired users) and style consistency for readers. If your issue with the AchievementTable template is one of size (and not simply visual style), then it's possible to use the following code instead: class=wikitable style="text-align:center; font-size: 90%;"

Hi CroesJ, I've noticed you have been introducing some unusual formatting into articles, primarily introducing large spaces between the sections of the article such as here. Note that the formal style is to leave one blank line between the sections as multiple ones create needless sections of whitespace. Also, when there is very little prose, it is useful to leave it together in one section, rather than creating numerous small sections (and forcing tables of content) such as this. Condensing small sections makes the article more readable and accessible for users.

I wish I had noticed this a bit earlier because these issues are now spread in a large number of athlete articles. If you could leave out/remove these spaces in future that would be very helpful! Take care. SFB 15:29, 16 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi CroesJ. I actually disagree with most of what is on the Athletics biographies style guide. A lot of it contradicts the wider Wikipedia style guide lines. The usage of flags in place of the country name particularly stands out as particularly poor usage because it assumes that the user knows what country the flag belongs to. I think your editing style before was actually better! I'm going to make some changes to the guidelines to bring it in line with the more reasonable site-wide guidelines.

In terms of differing athlete names in results, normally I do the following:

1. Check that the target article is at the most common name
2. Move the article if not or change the results link you've added to the correct name
3. Make sure there is a redirect from the alternate name to the article
4. Make sure the alternate name is documented on the article if it is used by many sources

There is no real right or wrong on this, but I find it's most useful to document the other names. Otherwise, it might not be clear that, for example, Ana Cláudia Lemos is the same person as Ana Cláudia Silva. SFB 16:34, 1 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Cuban athlete names present an unusual challenge because they are often completely made up! This BBC article explores their naming culture. I agree that listing all the names right at the start can be quite disruptive (a similar problem emerges with Russian transcriptions). I always add name variations in the "ALTERNATIVE NAMES" part of the persondata at the bottom of the page. Although not visible while reading, these will be picked up by search engines if the other name is searched.

The Wikidata project may well resolve this issue at some point. Name variations can be stored there (e.g. [1]). It's still a very new project so it's quite underdeveloped, but I get the impression that it might completely change how we edit in the future. It has replaced the interwikis already and I hope it will replace a lot of the basic category structure (it's ridiculous that there are no articles under French athletes, for example). If lists and results get transferred there then it's possible that things like achievement tables and personal bests could be generated automatically for athlete biographies. It could also pool result type workload across languages, so more time is spent working on content as a whole. At the moment though, we'll have to work around the imperfections! I'm sending you this because you've made quite a few edits to the template namespace in the past couple of months. If I've got this wrong, or if I haven't but you're not interested in my request, don't worry; this is the only notice I'm sending out on the subject :).

So, as you know (or should know - we sent out a centralnotice and several watchlist notices) we're planning to deploy the VisualEditor on Monday, 1 July, as the default editor. For those of us who prefer markup editing, fear not; we'll still be able to use the markup editor, which isn't going anywhere.

What's important here, though, is that the VisualEditor features an interactive template inspector; you click an icon on a template and it shows you the parameters, the contents of those fields, and human-readable parameter names, along with descriptions of what each parameter does. Personally, I find this pretty awesome, and from Monday it's going to be heavily used, since, as said, the VisualEditor will become the default.

The thing that generates the human-readable names and descriptions is a small JSON data structure, loaded through an extension called TemplateData. I'm reaching out to you in the hopes that you'd be willing and able to put some time into adding TemplateData to high-profile templates. It's pretty easy to understand (heck, if I can write it, anyone can) and you can find a guide here, along with a list of prominent templates, although I suspect we can all hazard a guess as to high-profile templates that would benefit from this. Hopefully you're willing to give it a try; the more TemplateData sections get added, the better the interface can be. If you run into any problems, drop a note on the Feedback page.
