Summary

Description
Italiano: This specimen, USNM 22456, was initially identified by Gazin (1962) as a hyaenodontid creodont: "Sinopa, possibly S. viverrina." Subsequently, Van Valen returned S. viverrina to the genus Prototomus (Van Valen, 1965), and then asked the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature to designate USNM 22456 as the neotype of Prototomus viverrinus Cope, 1874. Knowledge gained from additional collecting and research on Eocene carnivorous mammals indicates that USNM 22456 represents a new species Wyolestes dioctes rather than a representative of Prototomus; it is a carnivorous condylarth rather than a creodont.
