English: On September 6, 2017, at 12:30 UTC (8:30 AM Antigua and Barbuda Local Time), the Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) instrument aboard NOAA's preliminary GOES 16 satellite captured a true-color image of Hurricane Irma. This hurricane, originating from an invest area off the coast of Africa during the 2017 Atlantic hurricane season, demonstrated significant size and formidable strength. At the time of imaging, Hurricane Irma reached its peak intensity while traversing Antigua and Barbuda. Classified as a Category 5 Major Hurricane, it boasted sustained winds of 180 mph (290 km/h) (155 knots) on the 1-minute Saffir-Simpson scale, accompanied by a minimum central pressure of 914 mbar (27.0 inHg).
