Description

This is the most extraordinary creature. We found it wriggling in a puddle next to this dead bush-cricket. The worm (a Nematomorpha sp) is a parasite that grows inside the host and then somehow gets it to drown itself. It then emerges in the water and looks for a mate. It's not clear to me how the microscopic offspring then find another Orthopteran host.

Many thanks to Fred Sherberger for explaining all that in the field and holding it for the camera.
